Lake Tahoe Report #129
Aug. 8, 2005
By John Cobourn and Heather Segale

University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) faculty have been doing research at Lake Tahoe for decades. Following President Clinton’s 1997 Lake Tahoe Presidential Forum here, UNR researchers joined those of other institutions with the common goal of reversing the environmental decline in the Tahoe Basin. Scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno, the Desert Research Institute, the University of California, Davis and the US Geological Survey, among others, are collaborating to produce data needed by federal, state, regional, and local agencies charged with managing Tahoe’s environmental future.
One of UNR’s contributions to this effort to share scientific information is the new website called “Tahoe Research, Scholarship and Outreach.” You can find it at www.tahoe.unr.edu.

The purpose of the new website is to promote and showcase research done by UNR faculty and students and provide a place where people can find a wealth of other information about the lake. There is an extensive list of publications by faculty and staff, a huge selection of historic photographs, a listing of books and articles written about Tahoe and a unique collection of historic Tahoe maps.

“We georeferenced all of the topographic maps in the website, which means that
you can pull up a historic map over the top of a current one and see what changes have happened over the years,” explains Duncan Aldrich, the Tahoe Team leader.

Current UNR research and outreach projects in the Tahoe Basin are listed, with details about the project, the researchers involved, their contact information, and their websites. All masters theses and doctoral dissertations written about Tahoe by UNR graduate students are catalogued, with abstracts and information about how to obtain the full documents. There is also a section with links to the websites of over 50 partner agencies and research institutions around the country.

The news articles of the Lake Tahoe Report, such as this one, are also available on UNR’s Tahoe website. There is even a way to view streaming videos of the first 44 Lake Tahoe Report TV segments that have been broadcast over KOLO TV News over the last two years.

The new website has been created by the Tahoe Team of the University Libraries’ KnowledgeWorks program. The site took six librarians about six months to develop, and more information is being added every day. The team benefited from the support from Teaching and Learning Technologies, the Lake Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (LTEEC), the university of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Biological Resources Research Center (BRRC) and the University of Nevada Academy for the Environment.
