Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Released
date posted: October 14 2002

Native to the Tahoe Basin, the Lahontan cutthroat trout is currently listed as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Once plentiful in rivers, lakes, and streams throughout the region east of the Sierra Crest, the trout disappeared from the Lake Tahoe and Truckee River watersheds in the 1940s—the result of diversions of water for agriculture, pollution, over-fishing, and the introduction of non-native fish. In late June about 30,000 Lahontan cutthroat trout were released in the Truckee River between Tahoe City and Truckee. In mid July about 36,000 Lahontan cutthroat trout were released in Fallen Leaf Lake.
