Who: Sponsored by the Clean Water Team, the Lake Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (LTEEC) and YOU, the volunteers that make it happen!
What: Second Annual Snapshot Day. A one-day volunteer-based event to gather a wide array of water quality and habitat data for as many locations in the Lake Tahoe and Truckee River watersheds as possible. We are looking for volunteers to offer time and resources to make this effort a success. Teams will go out to a site to perform a stream walk (visual assessment) and take photos from photo points. Participants will also collect water quality measurements and samples in the field. Chemical parameters include dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, and temperature. Water samples for measuring turbidity, nutrients and coliform bacteria will be collected and brought to central meeting locations (Sierra Nevada College or Lake Tahoe Community College) for analysis. Sponsoring agencies will provide equipment.
When: May 4, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Team Leaders should also attend one training session (see below). Team leaders interested in the habitat assessment training may attend one of the additional habitat assessment training sessions. Volunteers need only attend the day of May 4th unless they are interested in being a Team Leader. Groups will meet at 9:00 a.m. and will head out to collect data at various locations around the Lake Tahoe and Truckee area:
- North Shore: Sierra Nevada College, Patterson Hall Dining Area, Incline Village, Nevada
- South Shore: Lake Tahoe Community College Chemistry Lab, South Lake Tahoe, California
- Truckee River: Truckee location to be determined
Refreshments provided at these start/culmination locations.
Team Leader Training: Team Leaders must attend one 2-hour training at either a North Shore or South Shore location:
- South Shore Team Leader Training on April 23, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (Lake Tahoe Community College Chemistry Lab, South Lake Tahoe, California);
- North Shore Team Leader Training on April 25, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (Sierra Nevada College, Patterson Hall Dining Area, Mountain Campus, Incline Village, Nevada);
Additional (optional) Habitat Assessment Training is available on April 23 (LTCC) or April 25 (SNC) from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.;
Why: The goals of this event are to stimulate citizen interest and participation in water quality issues locally. It is also intended to provide baseline data that could potentially be used in upcoming project identification and Environmental Improvement Project program monitoring, and to create a large-scale collaborative effort to prevent further degradation of water quality.
